In remote worksites in Papua New Guinea, companies lack access to clean, safe water for their employees. Purchasing and transporting bottled water to worksites was expensive, and the bottled water produced significant plastic waste. Thanks to an innovative technology, companies have an environmentally friendly solution.
Source Global, a company in Mercy Investment Services’ Environmental Solutions Fund, developed hydropanels that use solar power to absorb water vapor from the air, mineralize it for optimal taste, and deliver that clean water directly to a tap or faucet. TWM Group, a Papua New Guinea-owned and operated business, installed Source Global hydropanels to produce high-quality drinking water at its Roku, Central Province worksite, where drinking water is scarce. Using the hydropanels will reduce the company’s drinking water cost by 25 percent and offset up to 90 percent single-use plastic bottles. TWM plans to extend the project to a nearby village of more than 2,500 people, with plans to reach more vulnerable communities in the future.
