The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that food scraps and yard waste comprise more than 30 percent of consumers’ waste. This waste takes up space in landfills and emits methane, a strong greenhouse gas that contributes to our climate crisis. An investment through Mercy Investment Services’ Environmental Solutions Fund is turning this food waste into usable organic matter.

Atlas Organics collects food and yard waste, which it composts and converts to usable soil matter. Composting takes this organic waste and uses moisture and oxygen flow to attract micro-organisms that feed on the waste. The result is nutrient-rich matter that is beneficial in gardening and agriculture. Composting reduces waste and landfill methane emissions and removes solids, oil, grease and heavy metals from stormwater runoff. Atlas currently offers composting services to individuals, businesses and municipalities in Arkansas, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
