The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates more than 69 percent of plastic containers and packaging end up in landfills. One company in Mercy Investment Services’ Environmental Solutions Fund portfolio is reducing that number with its innovative sustainable alternative.

Ecologic Brands, Eco.Bottle is composed of an outer shell made from up to 100% recycled cardboard boxes and newspapers, and an inner shell plastic liner that uses 60 percent less plastic than rigid plastic bottles. Both components are fully recyclable, and the outer shell is also compostable. More than 20 major consumer brands including Seventh Generation and L’Oreal are using Ecologic’s packaging. Ecologic, founded by female entrepreneur Julie Corbett, was recently acquired by Jabil Packaging Solutions, whose global reach will help expand the availability of Ecologic’s product.
