Mercy Investment Services’ Environmental Solutions Fund investment in a high-tech greenhouse is improving access to nutritious food while implementing sustainable farming and bringing jobs to Appalachia.

The 60-acre facility in Morehead, Kentucky, grows affordable, pesticide-free produce, namely tomatoes. The hydroponic farm uses up to 90 percent less water than traditional farms, with a gutter system that collects rainwater for irrigation and passive solar power to minimize electricity use. The farm, one of the largest indoor farms in the United States, harvested more than 120,000 pounds of tomatoes in a single day this winter. Its location in Appalachia is within a one-day drive of 70 percent of the U.S. population, meaning the fresh produce can be delivered with fewer transportation costs and emissions. Watch this video for a look inside the farm.
