Food waste accounts for 7 – 10 percent of methane emissions annually, and restaurants and grocery stores feel the economic impact as food waste decreases their profits. Through the Environmental Solutions Fund, Mercy Investment Services is helping put food in the hands of consumers rather than landfills.

The Flashfood app connects consumers with grocery stores selling fresh food such as meat, dairy and produce at an average discount of 50 percent. Stores use the app to list products approaching their “best before” date, and consumers order from the app and pick up the items in the store. More than 1,450 stores from major retailers in the United States and Canada use Flashfood to reduce food waste and economic losses.

Since it was founded in 2016, Flashfood has saved more than 50 million pounds of food from landfills and 95 million pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents from entering the atmosphere. Regular customers save an average of $540 per year – significant savings as food prices have increased almost 11 percent. Watch this short video to learn more about Flashfood and its impact.
