Water is critical to many of our daily activities. Yet around the world, 785 million people do not have access to improved drinking water sources and two billion people lack access to improved sanitation. A new Mercy Partnership Fund investment is helping improve access to safe, household water and sanitation solutions to communities impacted by the global water crisis.

WaterEquity Global Access Fund, which supports the work of Water.org, makes loans to financial institutions that provide microloans to households and businesses to increase access to safe water and sanitation among families living in poverty. Mercy participated in the financing of WaterEquity through an innovative program of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation.

Water.org anticipates these loans will provide safe water and sanitation solutions, such as a toilet or a piped water connection, to five to eight million people in 10 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. At least 60% of loan recipients will be women; women and girls often spend hours each day gathering water and risk their personal safety due to the lack of indoor toilets.
