As Mercy Investment Services and other investors continue to push mining companies for change in the aftermath of the Vale mining disaster in Brumadinho, Brazil, the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) recently released the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. The standards on tailings management intend to guide all mining companies on best practices that result in the ultimate goal of zero harm to people and the environment. This investor-led initiative was informed by an expert panel and included extensive consultation with stakeholders in the affected communities. Mercy Investment Services will call on mining companies to implement these standards in future engagements.
