Following pressure from sponsors, the Washington National Football League team announced it will retire its nickname and logo, which are disparaging to Native Americans. The team has also said that the new nickname and logo will not contain any native imagery. The announcement comes after investors, including Mercy Investment Services, asked the team’s major sponsors such as FedEx, Nike and Pepsi to withdraw support of the team. Mercy Investment Services and the Sisters of Mercy have addressed this issue at the corporate level for many years as part of the critical concern of racism.
